How to replace your toilet

June 11, 2010 at 10:55 am | Category: Remodeling Contractor

Replacing a toilet is generally within the scope of most serious do-it-yourselfers. Removing and replacing the unit is a straightforward task. However, you should be prepared to cut off rusted bolts and nuts if the need arises. A hacksaw and a dremmel tool will help you get the job done faster.
After disconnecting the water supply line, remove the bolts that holds the toilet to the floor. Then lift the toilet off the flange.
Since you don’t want sewer gases voming up into the room use an old rag to block to plug up the hole. Next, scrap away any old wax that may be around the flange. If you are planning to re-use the existing bowl scrap the wax from around its base too.
Otherwise, press the new wax ring firmly into place around the base of the bowl.
Install new closet bolts before aligning and setting the toilet back onto the flange. All you have left to do now is tighten the bowl to the floor and then reconnect the water supply line.
